Judge Henry Lamm, chief justice of the supreme court of Missouri, has carved his name high on the keystone of the legal arch of the state, being recognized as one of the most eminent representatives whose names figure in connection with the history of the bench. He was born at Burbank, Wayne county, Ohio. December 3, 1846. The ancestry is traced back to German Quakers from the Rhine country. His great-grandfather, Peter Lamm, came to America in 1740, sailing from Rotterdam, Holland, on the ship, Lydia Jane, Captain Allen, master. He cast in his lot with the early settlers of the Penn colony, establishing his home upon a farm in what is now Heidelburg township, Berks county, Pennsylvania, where many of his descendants still live. The grandfather, Philip Lamm, crossed the mountains in 1803, taking up his abode in Lawrence county, Pennsylvania, on the Mahoning river. Again the spirit of the west called a representative of the family, when in 1846 William Lamm, father of Judge Lamm, went with his family to Ohio, settling on the edge of the western reserve in Wayne county. He was born in Berks county, Pennsylvania, and had married Catherine Zuver, a native of Lawrence county, Pennsylvania. He followed the occupation of farming, and both he and his wife are now deceased.

The birth of Henry Lamm occurred soon after the arrival of the family in Wayne county, Ohio. There he began his education in the common schools and afterward attended the Canaan Center Academy, while later he was a student in the Western College of Iowa, and in Michigan University, from which he was graduated with the class of 1869. He then established his home in Sedalia, Missouri, where he engaged in teaching school and in studying law until his admission to the bar in 1871.
